Christian Group Calls for 19 Days of National Prayer and Fasting for President-elect Barack Obama Before the Inauguration

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 /Christian Newswire/ -- Beginning January 1, the Christian Defense Coalition will lead prayer for President-Elect Obama outside of the White House every day at 12:00 noon until the Inauguration.

The group will close with a large prayer vigil on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday on Monday, January 19 at noon.

The Christian Defense Coalition is encouraging the faith community to pray for Mr. Obama at noon in their homes, churches and local communities all across the nation.

The group will be praying daily for President-Elect Obama from the 40 year old Inaugural Prayer of Dr. Billy Graham.

(See entire text of the prayer here.)

Some of the key quotes from Dr. Graham's prayer are:

"We thank Thee for this torch of faith handed to us by our forefathers. May we never let it be extinguished. Thou alone hast given us our prosperity, our freedom and power. This faith in God is our heritage and foundation."

"The whole world is watching to see if the faith of our fathers will stand the trials and tests of the hour. Too long we have neglected Thy word and ignored Thy laws. Too long we have tried to solve our problems without reference to Thee. Too long we have tried to live by bread alone."

"So we pray, O God, as we enter a new era, that we as a nation may experience a moral and spiritual restoration."

"O God, our new President needs Thee as no man ever needed Thee in leading a people! There will be times when he will be overwhelmed by the problems at home and abroad that have been building up to the breaking point for many years. Protect him from physical danger. And in the lonely moments of decision grant him an uncompromising courage to do what is morally right."

"What we pray for President Obama we pray for Vice President Biden and members of the Cabinet. May they be given a wisdom and courage that is beyond their own. Bless them as a team to lead America to the dawning of a new day with renewed trust in God that will lead to peace, justice, and prosperity."

As part of this season of prayer, Rev. Patrick Mahoney Director of the Christian Defense Coalition will be going on a 21 day fast and hunger strike to pray for and stand in solidarity and identify with the homeless, poor and disenfranchised of America as well as the 50,000,000 innocent victims of abortion.

Short Bio

I was born in a small town of Colorado and at age 11 our family moved to another small town in Idaho. At the of age of 13, I became interested in the guitar after seeing Elvis Presley on the Dorsey Bros., Steve Allen and finally on the Ed Sullivan Show and listening to him on the Radio & Juke Box; ("Thats Aright Mama"  "Heartbreak Hotel" Etc.)  After learning a few chords and driving my family crazy, I started playing in some of the local taverns and at some local dances. Our family eventually  moved to a small coastal town in California and by that time I was 18 and formed a band with some of my cousins and an uncle and started playing at a local pizza night club. It was there where I met my wife and continued playing on the weekends. After our second child was born we moved to Portland OR and it was there that my wife and I accepted the Lord into our heart and lives and experienced the miracle of salvation and the meaning of what it means to be Born Again. After our 3rd child I eventually stopped playing the night clubs and now that I'm retired, I have more time to write down record and produce the music the Lord has inspired thru-out the years in my studio.

ABOUT

I'm retired from the upholstery trade and was also a part-time weekend musician from my early teens and into my late 40s. I'm now writing and recording Gospel music in my studio, and what I mean by Gospel music; the Lord never changed my musical style he just changed the message. Now having more time to spend with family and friends, I really enjoy my grand children & great grand children.

I Am the light of the world: he that follows me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

What is repentance?

Christ solemnly warned a crowd: "... Unless you repent you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3, 5; compare Acts 5:31-32).

We rarely hear the word repent anymore. Few understand what it really means. In both Greek and Hebrew repent refers to a change of heart, a significant shift in our thinking, a transformation of purpose with emphasis on modifying one's conduct.

Peter tells us to "repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out" (Acts 3:19). The word translated "be converted" means to turn. Turn from what? Paul explained that the reward of sin is death (Romans 6:23). So when we repent we must turn away from the sins we are guilty of committing, and we must unconditionally surrender our will to God.

Though Christ came to take away our sins, we still have our part to do. He didn't come to save us in our sins or while we continue in sin.

If a judge pardons someone of a crime, he expects that person to cease his criminal acts. He doesn't pardon him so he can continue his life of lawbreaking. Likewise we are to turn away from sinful acts, deeds and thoughts. The apostle John tells us that "everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure" (1 John 3:3).

Saved by Grace Through Faith

by Lori Eldridge                (All scriptures are NIV unless otherwise noted.)

This page has been designed to explain the Christian understanding of salvation. A very good summary on this subject is in the Scofield Study Bible as a footnote to the first chapter of the book of Galations:

"The test of the Gospel is grace. If the message excludes grace, or mingles law with grace as the means either of justification or sanctification (Gal 2:21; 3:1-3), or denies the fact or guilt of sin, which alone gives grace its occasion and opportunity, it is 'a different' gospel, and the preacher of it is under the anathema of God" (vv. 8-9).

Following are several Scriptures that relay the true Gospel of Jesus Christ:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son" (John 3: 16-18).

We are saved by faith, not works:
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from youselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do " (Eph. 2:8,9).

It is the only gospel that is,
" the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes . . . " (Romans 1:16).

God does not purify us through works but,
" he [God] purified their hearts by faith. . . .We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved . . . "(Acts 15:9, 11).

The steps to confession,
" If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved " (Romans 10:9, 10). (this entails knowing the True Christ however).

Paul instructed us on the true Gospel:
" By this gospel you are saved, IF you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. OTHERWISE you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance, (1) that Christ died for our SINS according to the Scriptures, (2) that he was buried, (3) that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and (4) that he appeard to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more . . . . " (1 Cor. 15:2-6).

We were dead in our sins as unbelievers,
" As for you [believers], you were DEAD in your transgressions and sins [before you became believers], in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air [Satan], the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. . . .We were by nature objects of [God's] wrath. But because of his great love for us, God who is rich in Mercy, MADE US ALIVE with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved " (Ephesians 2:1-5).

We are saved by faith, not works (emotional experiences, saying a prayer, signing a covenant, etc.):
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

A Christ led life will produce righteousness,
" For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himeslf for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you " (Titus 2:11-15).

Peter's introduction to his second epistle,
" Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: . . . " (2 Peter 1:1).

John's warning to those who had heard the true Gospel,
" See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Falther. And this is what he promised us--even eternal life. I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. " (1 John 2:25-27).

There is only one way to God,
" Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who had the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life " (1 John 5:10-13).

We are warned about those who will lead us astray from the true Gospel,
" For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord " (Jude 1-4).
